It's not particularly about the type of food so much as it is the amount you intake. They have apps specifically designed to help gain or lose weight, I have an android and I would say the top app for you would be myfitnesspal.

The type of food you eat is absolutely essential to losing weight, along with proper portioning.
Im definitely not a nutrionist, but I have learned eating the proper foods makes all the difference when it comes to health and fitness. For your case, Id look into foods that potentially increase/boost your metabolism.
Lastly, it may be more what you need STOP eating rather than starting. Check your current diet and think of the things you eat on a regular basis that are not actually helping your body function or giving you proper nutrients/vitamins.
Look at food as fuel rather than a luxury. Although it is tough to do.

Staple foods in your diet should be Avacados, potatoes, beans and rice. I recommend you lift heavy weights every other day. Your body will put on healthy weight over time as long as you consume those foods I named.

I've been where you are. I considered myself light for my size. 5'7" 140 about 30 yrs ago. I worked out hard & heavy. Eat foods with no concern for their nutritional value and I still couldn't bust over the 130 lbs barrior. I was working in public safety and thought I was at a disavatage with my weight. I heard a nutuitionist speak on the subject of weight loss and asked her what I can do to gain weight. I surpised her and she said to see her for a consult. She taught me about proper food portions. My guess is you eat without considering the serving size of carbs, proteins, & fats. She put me on a plan and I gain 10 lbs in one month. All lean muscle. I filled out my pant legs & shirts. I ate every 2-3 hrs porportional meals. Educate yourself and do some research. Go to the books store, find a style that makes sense to you. The Zone Diet by Barry Sears made sence to me. I'm getting long winded here so I'll rap it up and just say, "Go see a Register Dietian." It will be worth your time. Make it a burning desire. Be disaplined. Eat when you have to. Be patient! Follow the plan! You will succeed!

Just a run through of things to do. First calculate your BMR (basal metabolic rate) and eat roughly 300-600 calories above that, depending on your somatotype. Keep the food clean. If you get cravings try some coffee or eat ice cubes. Low calories and curb hunger for a bit. As far as training there is a plethora of training types and programs, try a few and see what your body responds to. That last sentence also applies to your diet. Good people to seek advice from would be Rich Piana and Elliot House on YouTube, as well as bodybuilding.com.
